Comparison of changes from “Made in Germany” (MiG) bottom stamped Schaller made Original Floyd Rose to a new Schaller made Original Floyd Rose (late 2023, early 2024) with no “Made in Germany” (NO MiG) stamp on bottom.
MiG on left, NO MiG on right. The overall baseplate on the new NO MiG version is slightly larger than the MiG when compared from front edge to back edge behind the “Floyd Rose” text and bar area. It’s roughly between .5mm and 1mm to use simple measurements and not minute decimals to make understanding the size change easier. This is one of two changes causing fitment problems inside a recessed route on a body as shown later.
Also note the poor quality, peeling, uneven color and scratch covered black plating on the latest NO MIG baseplate. Any grey hues you see which are not pure black are not reflections, that’s uneven color plating. It is a brand new out of the box never used baseplate as Schaller ships them passing their QC.
Knife edge U cutout is roughly .5mm deeper into the baseplate on the MiG left compared to the NO MiG on right. This combined with the larger baseplate size front to back causes fitment issues as shown later inside a body route.
* * * This shallow knife edge cutout will also cause the D and high E string saddles which normally sit very close to the front edge of the baseplate when intonated to now, in some cases, overhang the front edge of the baseplate depending on scale length, string gauge and tuning used, which is not a good thing. While the bridge will function like that it certainly does not look good. * * *
A closer look at the size difference. MiG on left, NO MiG on right.
With the baseplates aligned from the back. MiG on left, NO MiG on right.
Simple measurement showing the roughly .5mm differences between the knife edge U cutouts on the baseplates.
MiG knife edge U cutout, roughly 6mm deep allowing the baseplate to sit closer to the front wall of the recessed route in the body.
NO MiG knife edge U cutout roughly 5.5mm deep which pushes the baseplate backwards within the body route.
The fitment problems within a recessed route that these size changes cause.
MiG fitment within a route, even gaps all around with plenty of room behind the bar and Floyd Rose logo areas of the baseplate.
NO MiG fitment within the same route. The shallower U cutout knife edges and larger baseplate push it backwards within the route and nearly touch the back wall behind the bar and Floyd Rose logo areas leaving a larger gap up front in the route and much tighter fit in the back.
